To tell you the truth I am not much for the technology side of the world. However, with the way the world is working it is becoming a bigger, and bigger part of our world today. Almost everywhere you look you see people on their phones, laptops, and many other things that use the internet. We as a nation, and a world have become very attached to the fact that you can get any bit of information that you want by touching a button on your phone or computer.
This brings me to the only discourse community that I belong to, which is Facebook.com, this is probably one of the more popular ones besides Myspace. I joined Facebook when I was a senior in high school. I joined so that I was able to communicate with my friends, and family who didn’t live near me. I like how you can stay connected to everyone, and you can post pictures and let me people know what you have been up to. I feel like it is on big social web. Another reason why I think it is so neat it how you can set your settings to what you want and choose who and who can not look at your profile.
For the Essay 2, I am going to go with Facebook. My argument is have people become to attached to the web and knowing about one another’s every move. You can virtually find out most things about a person by looking at their Facebook, looking through the pictures and seeing what other people are talking to them about. It can all get very personal fast. I hope that you guys feel like that is a good topic to talk about.

I think the fact that people are now constantly checking up on one another via the web has both down and upsides. One of the joys of modern culture is the fact that some degree of anonymity is possible. Yet so many of us constantly post on these social networking sites. I also agree it can get personal very fast. I think these two points may allow you to make an outstanding paper.
ReplyDeleteAlex,
ReplyDeleteYou make some good points, especailly how things can get personal pretty fast. I think what you have in mind sounds like you'll be able to write a very good paper full of very good points to help back up what you are aiming for.
I think your topic for your paper is a good one that you could go off of. There is so much resources that can back up your paper, and I agree with you things can get really personal on these sites, making people want to watch their every move.
ReplyDeleteAlex-
ReplyDeleteI think Facebook is a good place to start, but remember that this essay is about how a community uses a technology to perform identity and build community. The general Facebook community is a pretty big one to take on in a 5 to 7 page paper. Could you maybe analyze a profile page that many people belong to rather than an individual site - for example a campaign profile, a cause or group website, a sort of mini-fansite on Facebook?
Continue to work to narrow your thesis and keep your attention on ways the members of the group use communication (via text, images, music, videos, etc.) to perform and build identity and build community.
